As we settle into the New Year, I’ve been reflecting on the small changes we can make to improve our lives and our beautiful suburb. For me, that change has come in the form of a shiny new e-bike—an absolute game-changer!
After years of grumbling about traffic congestion and roadworks, I finally decided to give two wheels a try. What a revelation it’s been. Those cycle lanes that some complain about? They’ve given me a new lease on life, making me feel safe and confident as I rediscover Tāmaki Makaurau in a whole new way.
Just the other day, I took my grandchildren for a ride along the new Meola Road bike lanes on our way to a family picnic at Point Chevalier Beach. What a joy! It was quick, easy, and—best of all—so much fun. Seeing their little faces light up as they pedalled alongside me reminded me why creating a city that works for future generations is so important.
The reality is, we can’t keep building more roads to fix traffic problems. That’s like trying to solve obesity by loosening your belt! Instead, we need to invest in smarter alternatives—like safe cycling infrastructure. Since getting my e-bike, my daily outings have been a breeze: no parking hassles, no petrol costs, just fresh air, a bit of exercise, and the sheer thrill of freedom. I only wish I’d done this sooner!
My hope for Tāmaki Makaurau is that we continue to expand the cycling network so that more people, of all ages, can enjoy the benefits. A healthier, greener, and more connected city? Now that’s something worth pedalling towards.
