One-Eyed Rat Studios seeks NZ$15,000 to complete Things We Miss in the Moonlight, a 10-minute CG animated short set in a retro-future Tāmaki Makaurau.
One-Eyed Rat Studios, a 3D animation production team made up of 26 recent graduates, has launched a crowdfunding campaign to fund their debut short film, Things We Miss in the Moonlight. The campaign opened on 8 July with a goal of NZ$15000.
The film is a sci-fi comedy set in a post-apocalyptic version of Tāmaki Makaurau, imagined through a 1950s retro-future lens. After humans disappear, a community of household service robots carries on, including Buddy, a controlling HomeBuddy unit, and her mutated rat companion One-Eye. When One-Eye brings home an unidentified sapling, Buddy is forced to confront the limits of her programming in order to keep it alive.
The studio was founded during the team's final year of university and has grown since graduation to include artists, animators, VFX artists, a sound engineer, and marketing crew. With the industry proving difficult for new graduates to break into, the team chose to create their own opportunity, building original IP and continuing to practise their craft together.

Funds raised will go towards software licensing, digital storage, social media marketing, and sound production, including original scores, foley, and voice acting. Remaining funds will cover post-production and a preview screening in Summer 2027.
