Art exhibition to celebrate the beauty in the botannical

PETAL is a vibrant Group Show of contemporary New Zealand artists celebrating the beauty in the botanical and opens Thursday the 27th April at The Frame Gallery in Herne Bay.

“We have curated the exhibition to show a diverse range of styles in the botanical genre bringing the outside into peoples’ home. It’s a showcase of joyous and uplifting work, “said Creative Director Zekiah Heath.

The artists are wildly different in their works, yet all incorporate the beauty in the botanical.

Frankie Meaden is a textile artist combining embroidery on a giant scale with painting, rope and recycled street banners to create pieces that are stunning in their impact and beauty. She creates large scale public works as well as collectable pieces. Original and inspiring art.

Well known for his “Digital Dilemma” and “Hybrid” themes, floral work from Brad Novak may not seem to fit with Novak’s oeuvre. However, he started painting minimalist floral in the early 2000’s, but then segued into urban Pop Art.

He has recently shared a portrait exhibition with Michael Smither and had a solo show in Chicago at the coveted Vertical Gallery.

His new floral work he views as portraiture yet also Still Life. “Flowers and plants have been consistently running throughout my work often in the background but now they take centre stage”.

Lizzie Pannell gave up a career in advertising to follow her passion to paint.

“For me painting is all the good emotions when I paint I feel deeply calm. Some of my larger works can take months as there is a lot of layering and contemplation that goes into these pieces. Like real flowers I want them to grow organically”

Some of her larger works can take months and for her when she steps back and sees the whole picture it is like a new world has come together “one petal at a time.”

Brenda Clews wants to take the viewer of her paintings on a jaunt through the park and a visit to the hydrangea. The vivid jewel tones of Brenda’s work are influenced by the hydrangea gardens of Auckland’s Cornwell Park. Her lush scenes are full of life and colour. “These flowers take on such energy, they are definitely not wallflowers!”

Jemma Ennis says her current series of work explores the concept of fragmentation taking visual cues from the Colour Field painters, the Constructivism movement with a splash of Pop Art.

My current series explores the concept of fragmentation – picking apart and discarding the finer details, manipulating the image and reconstructing it in a way that becomes unrecognisable.

THE FRAME GALLEY, HERNE BAY

Karen Paterson and Zekiah Heath have been running The Frame Gallery since 2019. Prior to them taking over the gallery the space did not have curated exhibitions. This is the first exhibition at the Gallery for 2023.

The focus of The Frame Gallery is to develop the art collection into a diverse contemporary offering, including original art, sculpture and limited edition prints from emerging and established NZ artists. Zekiah has always had the desire to facilitate artists into developing their artistic career.
