This week, Auckland Climate Festival 2022 has released its complete programme of 125+ innovative and engaging climate focussed events taking place from 1–31 October.
This year the festival theme is ‘Ancestor. Me. I am a good ancestor. Believing in our future’ with a focus on asking Aucklanders to consider our role as future ancestors who will be proud of the actions we’ve taken to address the climate challenges we are facing.
Auckland Climate Festival 2022 will be hosted by rangatahi, community groups and climate and business leaders, with over 125+ impactful events being held throughout Tāmaki Makaurau, to ensure there is something in the programme for everyone to participate in during the month of October. Most of these events are free, or low cost and open to anyone to attend.
The driver behind the festival is to celebrate and accelerate climate action in the community. Now in its second year, the number of climate-focussed events during the month of Auckland Climate Festival has almost doubled, and founder Michelle Kennedy says she is looking forward to seeing more participants get together in-person, and online in October to encourage and inspire each other towards a more positive climate future.
“I’m really excited about the community-building aspect of the festival this year, given that many of the events and activations are in-person. That is where the true change will come from.
The festival gives us an opportunity as a city to come together and build community cohesion – something that will become increasingly important as we continue to face the impacts of climate change and work together to both adapt to these, but also transform the way we do things as a collective – in the same direction – and for good”.
Director of Community Engagement at Britomart, Jeremy Hansen, is excited to be hosting multiple events and activations in the city centre, as part of the festival this year.
“We have tens of thousands of people working in and passing through Britomart every day. The festival is a great stimulus for productive conversations with all these people, which we hope can inspire future collective action.
We’re excited to be bringing the finalists in NZ Geographic magazine’s Photographer of the Year award to large-scale displays in Britomart and with everything else that’s going on during the festival, there will be lots of opportunities for everyone to focus on solutions to the challenges we face.”
