Local Fashion: Mahsa releases New Bohemia

The first ‘mood’ to be released by the local label in two years, Mahsa Mood 5: New Bohemia has officially arrived – and it’s beautiful! Following on from Enduring Nature, launched in 2020, New Bohemia is Mahsa’s response to our world reopening.

“After a long season of retreat, dressing for comfort and immersing ourselves in the consolations and inspirations of art, music and literature at home, now we are moving on,” says Mahsa Willis, Mahsa founder and creative director.

Shot by Aotearoa, New Zealand creative duo, Adam Bryce and Yasmine Ganley on the wild west coast, Mahsa muse, model Tia Harris, captures the spirit of optimism and freedom in loose, bold shapes in a palette inspired by the colours of summer – sky blue, lilac, peony-pink, music-festival mud-brown, sweet organic maple and an oversized paisley print that harks back to the Summer of Love.

The new Long Celebration Shirt - with its slightly exaggerated Seventies-style collar and bell sleeves - is made to throw on and go, while the party-ready Gala Shirt gives a sexy glimpse of skin between the triple ties on the front (or back, if you’d rather).

The ultra-relaxed and silky Travel Pant skims the legs to end with a gentle flare in black or Paloma print, and can be paired with a matching Gentleman Shirt in the same fabric for sophisticated pyjama dressing. The Elsa Skirt sits flat at the front and is gathered at the waist back for an unrestricted fit, and in the silk-like Paloma print, it’s elegant and fun, unbuttoning at the front as high as you dare.

Finally, with a button-down front and squared-off neckline, the Folk Shirt epitomises Mood’s romantic nostalgia for the hopeful era led by the music of Nina Simone, Joan Baez, and Joni Mitchell.

“Freedom is a state of mind, one that asks us to make a shift in thinking, as well as a shift in dressing,” says Mahsa. “We feel excited by the prospect of allowing ourselves to run with our feelings again, seeking beauty, pleasure and adventure. Life is a journey that unfolds, often in unexpected ways. The road that lies ahead of us now, with all it may hold, was reached by the roads we have already travelled.”

Mahsa Mood 5: New Bohemia is available online www.mahsa.co.nz and from selected stockists in New Zealand and internationally.
