What Council are proposing to do…
We are proposing to create a new walking track loop within the recently replanted native bush area of Western Springs Lakeside Te Wai Ōrea Park. The track would be a unique opportunity for people to view and experience the newly established native bush in an inner-city environment.
Background to the proposal
Native replanting
In 2021 we removed a number pine trees as part of the Western Springs Native Bush Restoration Project(External link). Native bush is being established in the area and thousands of seedlings have been planted by local schools, the community, and contractors.
Further planting is planned for autumn-winter 2022.
About the proposed new walking track loop
Track location and design
The new track would start from the southern end of the existing access path by the Motions Creek – Waiateao pedestrian bridge. A sloped section would lead to a longer open level area, which would then re-join the existing access path. This would create a track through the regenerating native bush area.
Steps would be built into the new track to accommodate the gradient of the slope. There are currently views over to Ōwairaka maunga, the Western Springs Lake, and out to the Waitākere Ranges from the proposed location of the new track. These views would likely stay unobstructed for at least three to five years before the regenerating bush grows taller. The proposed track would be 1.2m wide with a gravel surface.

We want to know whether you would like a new walking track through the Western Springs Lakeside Te Wai Ōrea Park to loop in with the existing walking track.
We would also like to know your thoughts on new seating and other features, such as information signs, that might also be included.

• Pick up a hard copy of the survey at the Grey Lynn Library or email westernspringstrack@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz(External link) to have one sent to you.
• Attend one of the information sessions onsite at the Western Springs Forest, these will show the location of the proposed track using markers as well as details on signage. These sessions will not be manned by staff due to COVID19 red light restrictions.

Saturday morning 26 February 2022 10am – 12pm
What happens next
All feedback will be analysed and presented to the Waitematā Local Board in early 2022.
