Beauty news: a love of layering Just in time for the gifting season, Abel Odor, the Wellington based plant-derived fragrance house, has launched the Layering Set - a limited edition set of their three best-selling fragrances, specially designed for layering.
For those unfamiliar with the brand, here’s a little history. Following a failed search for a natural perfume that was chic, modern and long lasting, Abel Odor was founded in 2013 in Amsterdam by New Zealander Frances Shoemack, now based in Wellington. From day one, the brand stuck to that clear mission; to inspire positive change by making the world’s best natural perfume, without compromising on ethics or aesthetics. Working with Australasia’s only Master Perfumer, Sao Paulo-based Isaac Sinclair, Abel sets itself apart in its use of the latest natural science and its relentless position at the intersection of sustainability and minimalist luxury.
Every single ingredient, in every one of their perfumes, started its life as a plant. Their fragrances are made entirely of essential oils, extracts and plant derived scent molecules in a base of organically certified, food grade grain alcohol. And that’s it. And how do they smell? In 2018, the UK Financial Times quoted Abel as “well on their way to being the world’s best natural perfume”, and the brand has been featured globally in Vogue, Conde Nast and Monocle (both print and film) among others. Although based in New Zealand, the brand boasts a retail network in more than thirty countries strong, and including iconic stores such as Galeries Lafayette in Paris and Dubai, Liberty London, BlueMercury in New York and Isetan Tokyo.
But back to the limited edition, luxury set, which features a 15ml bottle of Cyan Nori - a sweet salty musk, Green Cedar - a velvety rich wood and my favourite Abel scent, and Pink Iris - a contemporary classic floral. “Natural perfume already evolves a lot on skin,” says Sinclair, “so when you layer Abel scents, you’re really creating something unique... Gone are the days of wanting to smell like everyone else.”
“I love hearing about our customers layering their fragrances,” Shoemack adds, “as it really shows a deeper awareness of, and connection to, the scents. My personal favourite combination is Green Cedar on my skin and Cyan Nori in my hair, but I also love to wear Green Cedar or Cyan Nori during the day and then add a spray of Pink Iris when I head out in the evening for a little extra something.”
Abel recommends trialling one fragrance on skin, and one (or more) on hair or clothes so the fragrances can be smelt in unison but not blended. On skin, the scent will really open up with the warmth of your blood, on hair or clothes the fragrance will last longer.
