The plant-based milk movement has been gaining serious momentum. Shares in Swedish company, Oatly surged by 30 per cent on the company’s recent stock market debut, valuing the oat-milk maker at $13bn (18bn NZD).
Here in New Zealand, the Plant Milk market is of a similar incline, with a value of $76m. Betting on the continued success of alternate milk is Jamie Wilson, founder of Plant Projects, the company that introduced Kiwis to cult brand Oatly, has launched a brand of coffee roasted specifically for plant-based milk.
Uniquely positioned to hear first-hand what plant milk drinkers and baristas needed, Wilson realised there was a gap for a coffee explicitly made for dairy-free milk. The all-new Plant Projects Coffee creates the perfect soy, almond, or oat milk latte. Its low acidity blend prevents the coffee and plant milk from splitting and curdling. It also retains the punchy flavour notes through your milk choice, so you can still taste all the goodness of the coffee. Plus, the added bonus of a light acidity coffee means it is also kinder on the stomach.
"Coffee is typically created by coffee people, to be enjoyed on its own,” he says. “We have roasted a coffee specifically for us plant milk people, to be enjoyed with plant milk. The perfect blend of beans creates a low acidity coffee and best flavours to ensure the smoothest of all plant milk lattes or flat whites.”
Just a few years ago, the market for alternate milk were vegans, vegetarians, or those who had an intolerance to dairy. The recent numbers prove plant-based milk has moved to the mainstream.
“Brands like Oatly talk candidly about the dire need for environmental and agricultural change and to critically address our reliance on dairy,” says Wilson. At Plant Projects we echo that opinion. Our new coffee, we hope, will further this conversation,” says Jamie Wilson.
