Beverage news: Meet Peddlers Rare Shanghai Gin

With notes of Sichuan pepper, Buddha's hand and Chinese mint, the award-winning flavour profile of Peddlers Rare Shanghai Gin is equally as delicious in a cocktail or mingling with mixers, and it’s definitely an exciting new addition to the beverage scene.

Founded by a group of Kiwi and Chinese friends all living in Shanghai, the multicultural team came together to create the first craft gin from China. The group’s shared passion for innovation has meant multiple awards and a strong following in China, especially amongst the bartending scene. In 2019 they were voted the number one bartender brand in China, beating out global competitors. The Shanghai-based distillers are now looking to reach a global cocktail crowd and are actively exporting to markets, including New Zealand.

The expansion of this innovative craft spirit follows a surge in demand as an adventurous new generation seeks boundary-pushing and unique flavours created by artisans rather than big brands and global corporations. Now being served at bars around New Zealand including the likes of Hotel Ponsonby and Clipper, Peddlers Gin is quickly becoming the preferred pour by some of New Zealand's leading mixologists.

Ryan McLeod, part of the founding team based in New Zealand, says he is excited to introduce Peddlers Gin to discerning Kiwi palates. “A little over five years ago, we embarked on this wild journey to create China’s first craft gin. Since launch, the industry support and public uptake has been phenomenal, and I’m thrilled we can now bring Peddlers Gin to New Zealand.

Peddlers use the London Dry method, which means no additives or artificial flavours are added after distillation. Their use of a traditional copper pot ensures a crisp, clean taste. Peddlers Gin is double distilled, with a vapour infusion of the delicate Chinese botanicals including Sichuan pepper from the mountains of Hanyuan, near Chengdu.

Along with being critically acclaimed, earning the silver medal from the San Fran World Spirits Awards and gold at CWSA, Peddlers Gin stands out for its distinctive bottle design. Peddlers worked alongside leading London-based agency OMSE to create the apothecary-esque glassware with its unique ringed shoulder and equally balanced Chinese and English.
