Premium New Zealand-based natural rug company, Nodi, has opened a beautiful new showroom in the heart of Ponsonby.
Aiming to create a space where people can explore a world of natural textures, founder Olivia Moon transformed the Mackelvie Street location into a tactile space using authentic materials and a calm, muted palette that provides a gentle backdrop for the textured rugs to stand out. The likes of soft plastered walls, sanded kauri floors and a collection of both new and antique furniture make the space really feel like home.
“We want people to connect with the essence of why we exist and feel like they can take this value away with them to recreate in their own personal spaces,” says Moon. “We want to create a natural place of connection between people and their environment. We hope to have created an environment where people feel both inspired and guided by our wonderful team to select the right rug for their space.”
Established in 2015, Nodi (meaning knots in Italian), was born from Moon’s creative eye, love for imperfection and a quest to develop something meaningful using natural resources. A first-hand experience with the craft of knotted rugs whilst studying Textile Design at the Institute of Design in Milan led the talented creative on a six month trip around India, where she explored rug factories and learned about the hand-crafted rug making process from skilled artisans.
Olivia has developed a core range that is timeless, modern and designed to last. Instead of producing new ranges every season, it is updated with colours or styles where the team sees a gap, ensuring Nodi produces less waste. All rugs are made in certified GoodWeave factories in India, each manufacturer chosen for their unique styles of weaving. With each rug crafted carefully by hand, the production process is reliant on an age-old craft, working with skilled artisans to meticulously weave truly unique pieces. Olivia hopes the new showroom will be a place where people can learn about the process of rug making as well as the quality of the natural fibres Nodi uses.
“Floors are often forgotten about in the home, yet they're the anchor to a space,” she says. “We believe adding natural rugs to layer a space adds not only warmth and texture, but creates a place where people can unwind and connect together.”
