With a brand new flagship studio now open, Auckland’s only rhythm cycling provider, Westward Cycle, is excited to be the first to bring “a dance party on a bike” both to the city, and to the country as a whole.
Rhythm cycling is static biking in a studio environment, choreographed to pumping music, with low lighting, led by positive, encouraging instructors in a place where everyone can feel at ease to enjoy themselves, says founder Sarah Fairburn.
While it is wildly popular overseas with brands such a SoulCycle leading the rhythm cycling movement and popping up in movies, TV and popular culture regularly, the format has not been available in New Zealand until Westward Cycle launched. “It’s more than an engaging, full-body workout - it’s a dance party on a bike,” Fairburn said. “We’re not like a typical gym - we’re built on community and no one has to worry about fitting in as it’s for everyone”.
Fairburn says lockdown brought another stress burden to Auckland in particular, so now is a good time to try what is on offer at the new, custom designed Eden Terrace studio, in order to look after health and wellbeing and take some time away from all distractions to feel good.
In fact, the team at Westward Cycle has done its best to ensure even the first lockdown didn’t stop class members from getting their rhythm cycling fix - by personally delivering the bikes from the studio to members’ houses and hosting virtual classes.
“We loaded them in a truck and dropped them off, along with the shoes and a set of weights, so that people could do the classes from home,” Fairburn said. “We are built on community and this just seemed the logical way to keep our community going”.
Last weekend’s launch offered taster classes, or ‘rides’, goodie bags and nibbles, with a full schedule of people in attendance keen to try out the unique and fun form of exercise.
With Auckland still under restrictions, social distancing, contact tracing and thorough hygiene practices are in place at the studio.
