A study in red: Yu Mei Spring 2020

A flash of colour on even the greyest of days, New Zealand accessories brand Yu Mei’s Spring 20 collection was inspired by the anthurium flower and is a truly joyous study in red.

A flash of colour on even the greyest of days, New Zealand accessories brand Yu Mei’s Spring 20 collection was inspired by the anthurium flower and is a truly joyous study in red.

“Through our Spring 20 collection we wanted to explore Chinese cultural meanings of the colour red: good luck, fortune, prosperity and determination,” says super talented Yu Mei founder, Jessie Wong. “Whether gifting to others or oneself - both are important acknowledgements of gratitude. With the disruptive year we’ve had so far we wanted to use colours that serve as a reminder to live life purposefully and with passion. To appreciate the people around you by telling them so, and to be bold and unapologetic in your own decisions.”

Through evocative shades of red, from the soft Roan Rouge to a rich Tamarillo, the collection approaches design from an emotive perspective and each and every piece is a joy to behold. Yu Mei has always designed their bags from the needs of real people - staying true to its philosophy of balancing luxury with pragmatism and function – and it shows.

“We design for ourselves because we are our customers,” says Jessie. “Yu Mei has always had a strong focus on design by women, for women. We are a brand for every woman.”
