A New Chapter for Kiwi Classical Stars: Meet the Korimako Trio
For three decades, violinist Helene Pohl and cellist Rolf Gjelsten were the cornerstones of the New Zealand String Quartet. Having toured the globe, recorded dozens of albums, and been honoured for their services to music, they’ve shaped the sound of Aotearoa’s classical scene for a generation.
Now, alongside internationally acclaimed German pianist Michael Endres they’ve formed a powerhouse ensemble: the Korimako Trio.
Named after the NZ bellbird for its pure, reverberant song, the trio brings together decades of deep artistic chemistry and world-class mastery, Their concerts to date have brought many of their audience to their feet and inspired one critic to heap praise on their “breathtaking mastery of intent, understanding and execution throughout” – Middle C. Elizabeth Kerr, in her Five Lines review highlights their “musical rapport and dynamic unity” and “the lovely resonant string playing” of the trio.
The Korimako Trio is making its Auckland debut on Wednesday, September 16 at Kahui St David’s as part of a tour that also includes concerts in Warkworth, Kerikeri and Waiheke Island. The Trio’s Auckland concert shows off both the mastery and the rapport of these highly talented musicians with each other and with their audience in a programme that spans the rich, emotional depth of Haydn, Copland, Schubert, and Brahms. The programme opens with one of Haydn’s most delightful piano trios, a work that features a variety of sound textures and atmospheres ranging from deeply moving to utterly playful. It is followed by “Vitebsk,” written by American composer Aaron Copland, which is based on a mournful old Jewish melody which is contrasted with music that can best be described as a raucous Roaring Twenties party. Spirits are then soothed with Franz Schubert’s soul stirring “Notturno” and the beloved and masterful Brahms C Major Trio, one of the finest, most sophisticated, and symphonically rich chamber works of the late Romantic era.rounds out the programme.
