On behalf of the Iranian-Kiwi community and supporters of human rights in New Zealand, Dr Hesam Shad would like to invite you to attend their peaceful demonstration on Saturday, 19 September, from 2:00–3:00pm at Western Park, Ponsonby.
The demonstration will bring together Iranian New Zealanders and many New Zealanders from the wider community who are coming together peacefully to stand in support of freedom, democracy, human rights, and the right of the Iranian people to determine their own future.
As Dr Shad says, "For many Iranian New Zealanders, Iran is not simply a country in the news. It is our homeland, our heritage, and the place where our families and loved ones continue to live. Events in Iran therefore have a deeply personal impact on our community. At the same time, we are encouraged to see New Zealanders from outside the Iranian community standing alongside us in support of universal human rights and freedom.
"There is also a broader New Zealand interest in what happens in Iran and the Middle East. Conflict and instability in the region have contributed to pressure on energy, fuel, shipping and commodity prices, with impacts that can ultimately be felt in the cost of living in New Zealand and around the world. We believe that the Iranian people deserve a future in which their country contributes to regional stability and prosperity rather than being used as a source of conflict and instability.
"Our message is that the Iranian regime should no longer be allowed to use regional instability, conflict and fear as leverage, and that meaningful change in Iran matters not only to Iranians but to the wider international community.
"We believe this is a story of relevance to New Zealand audiences. The demonstration reflects both the personal connection of the Iranian-Kiwi community to events in Iran and the broader support within New Zealand for human rights, democratic values and peace."
