Auckland Theatre Company Presents MISERY

Auckland Theatre Company Presents MISERY

Auckland Theatre Company launches their 2027 season with the King of Horror, Stephen King’s cult favourite Misery - the ultimate psychological thriller: a tense game of cat and mouse between reader and writer, nurse and patient, fan and celebrity.

On at the ASB Waterfront Theatre from Tuesday, January 26 until Saturday, February 20, 2027, single tickets will go on sale, Tuesday October 27, 2026.

King’s best-selling 1987 novel is adapted by Academy Award-winning screenwriter William Goldman into an edge-of-your-seat theatrical nail-biter, a battle of wits and wills.

Two of New Zealand’s foremost screen and stage actors, Michael Hurst ONZM (Paul Sheldon) and Emmy Award winner Morgana O’Reilly (Annie Wilkes), play the roles made famous by James Caan and Kathy Bates in the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award winning 1990 film. Acclaimed NZ Samoan actor Fasitua Amosa (King Lear, Young Rock) completes the tight cast in the role of Sheriff Buster, the local County lawman.

As they unpick the rotten heart of a parasocial relationship, you can expect unpredictability, high-wire deceit and twisted expressions of devotion. When obsession devolves into possession and dependence twists into addiction, things go from bad to worse. And, in this isolated, snow-gripped remote cabin of 1987, it’s impossible to escape.

Begin the new year with an ice-cold plunge into the twisted mind of Stephen King, brought to life by renowned theatre, TV and film director Simon Bennett.  Hurst and O’Reilly’s on stage chemistry is palpable, this will be the ultimate antidote to the back-to-work blues.
