Auckland Libraries’ summer reading challenge returns as a family affair with awesome prizes!

This summer, Auckland Council Libraries isn’t just offering a reading challenge – it's inviting every whānau in Tāmaki Makaurau to become a champion of literacy and win some wonderful prizes. The beloved, free reading challenge Raumati Reads, returns to transform the school holidays into a reading adventure the whole family can get behind.

Far more than just a summer reading book club, Raumati Reads ignites young imaginations and is a must-do over the school break. It aims to prevent the child literacy decline otherwise known as the ‘summer slide’ and helps ensure kids are sharp and ready for the new school year.

The initiative, now in its third year, is a proactive step towards addressing the critical issue of literacy in Aotearoa, where 44% of year 8 students are currently below the expected reading level (NMSSA Report, 2019). Based out of libraries all over Auckland, and accessible through the Auckland Libraries’ website, it’s a completely free, fun-filled summer reading challenge for primary school-aged children, packed with activities, learning, and fantastic family prizes.

Raumati Reads Project Lead Lawren Matrix says the challenge is designed to help whānau weave reading into their summer activities/ break so tamariki return to the classroom feeling confident and prepared for a new year of learning

“Raumati Reads aims to take the pressure out of daily reading to become an enjoyable lifelong habit. We’d love for parents and caregivers to jump on board and support the kaupapa! It’s a simple, free way to help your kids keep their reading skills sharp while unlocking awesome rewards the whole whānau can enjoy

Running from Saturday 6 December 2025 to Sunday 1 February 2026, Raumati Reads encourages reading confidence, connection, and a lifelong love of books. Participants simply track their reading progress through engaging activities while earning amazing rewards for every milestone reached. This year these incredible prizes include Auckland Live event vouchers, family passes for the Auckland Football Club, free swim passes for Auckland Council’s Pools and Leisure Centres and even annual family passes at Auckland Zoo for unlimited whānau fun

Libraries across Tāmaki Makaurau will host free events and activities throughout the challenge, supporting participating families on their summer reading journey.

Auckland Libraries Public Engagement Manager Krissy Taylor says literacy lays the groundwork for success.

“By providing an opportunity like Raumati Reads, supported by our dedicated librarians and community partners, we are making an active investment in the future success of our tamariki and fostering what we hope will become a life-long love of learning and reading.”

“Don’t let the summer slide sneak up on your whānau,” adds Lawren.

“Transport them instead to other worlds this summer, through storytelling, learning and creativity with Raumati Reads and reap the rewards.
