Farewell to Trade Aid Ponsonby: A champion of fair trade for 22 years

On Monday, 25 November, Trade Aid Ponsonby will close its doors for the final time, marking the end of an incredible 22-year journey as a vibrant hub for fair trade and education in Auckland.

Since opening in 2002, this little shop has made a big impact – locally and globally.

Trade Aid Ponsonby stood out for its creativity and community spirit. From hosting the much-loved "Junk to Green Funk" jute bag competitions to art showcases and events like the Devonport Christmas Markets, the store brought people together in celebration of fair trade and sustainability.

This impact wouldn’t have been possible without the leadership of its exceptional store managers, each of whom brought their unique energy and passion for ethical living to the movement. Nor would it have thrived without the commitment of our dedicated staff and volunteers, who gave their time, energy, and hearts to championing fair pay, equality, and the stories of artisans and farmers worldwide.

Over the years, Trade Aid Ponsonby welcomed a diverse range of visitors, from international celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin to inspiring fair trade advocates, including coffee growers from Ethiopia. The store became a place where fair trade wasn’t just meaningful – it was cool.

We’re deeply grateful to everyone who made Trade Aid Ponsonby special: our volunteers, shop assistants, store managers, trustees, and, of course, the Auckland community. Together, we’ve educated thousands on the importance of ethical trade and helped improve lives across the globe.

Though our doors are closing, our mission remains as strong as ever. We’ll continue to champion fair trade, inspire conscious consumption, and work towards a world where trade is fair for all.

As a heartfelt thank-you to our Auckland supporters, we’re offering 50-85% off our handcrafted, fair trade homewares. It’s our way of celebrating the community that has stood by us and helped make a difference.

Thank you, Auckland, for 22 incredible years.
