Telling stories is what separates human beings from other species. We know other mammals have emotions and communicate but they don’t gather around a fireplace and share stories. Storytelling is universal to every culture and the Covert Theatre is celebrating this aged-old tradition with a brand new show called Stories on Sunday.
Inspired by The Moth, a live storytelling show created in 1997 in the US, Stories on Sunday is open to anyone and everyone with a story to tell. Each show has a theme, and the storytellers explore this theme with a true, personal story.
Who are the storytellers? Stories on Sunday is based on the premise that everyone has a story so anyone can be a storyteller. You simply show up on the night and put your name in a hat. Names are drawn randomly, and each storyteller has between 5 to 7 minutes to tell their story loosely connected to the theme of the night. There are no notes or slides permitted, just the storyteller connecting with their audience through the power of stories.
This show is another way the Covert Theatre lives its purpose to enhance human connection through play. Stories on Sunday is a meaningful way that people can express the diversity and commonalty of the human experience.
The theme for the opening show is Home is where the Heart Is.
