Open wide, Auckland. You’ve been a very, very naughty city. It’s time to submit to your deepest, darkest hungers… this July for the first ever edition of Karangahape’s Restaurant month; Eat It.

As New Zealand’s Red Light home since the early 1960s, Karangahape Road has always played host to the intersection of food and sex. For Eat It taking place this July, restaurateurs up and down the 1km strip are celebrating the pairing of the two greatest sins, lust and gluttony.

Eat It’s schedule of 20 food and drink driven events over the course of July will cater to every foodie kink and fantasy. With one-off cocktails and culinary delights, each event recognises the sexual prominence of the iconic strip.

The opening night will be Caluzzi Cabaret on Thursday July 4, whose drag acts have been an iconic part of K' Road’s nightlife for nearly 30 years. Alongside their food menu, they will be putting on a special ‘Show Us Your Melons’ cocktail.

“K' Road is the epicentre of pleasure for New Zealand. There’s entertainment pleasure, sexual pleasure, and with the rise of fancy food, there’s gastronomic pleasure now, too,” said Nick Hall, co-owner of Caluzzi Cabaret.

“It’s always been known for what people call its underbelly, which looks different these days, but it’s still there and it's not going anywhere. K' Road is the place where you can be a sex worker or you can be a drag queen or you can be a politician if you like, and we can all sit down and share a meal together.”

For modern Filipino restaurant Bar Magda, their evening is a nod to the curious history of their Cross Street location. Their ‘Lily’s special’ menu on July 17 is designed for two, but accommodates as many as six, as did the previous tenant of their address, a Swinger’s Club named Lily’s.

“Our location has been the host to all kinds of establishments and that history is part of our DNA as a business, why wouldn’t we celebrate it?” said Bar Magda’s Carlo Buenaventura.

“Whether you’re mixing it up for dinner, or you’re bringing along a third, Magda’s aphrodisiac stuffed squid is designed to ignite passion.”

Those attending the K' Road events over the course of July can go in to win a daily draw of a $200 voucher to participating businesses. To enter they need only send their receipt to either social@kroad.com or the @kroadnz Instagram.

Those that attend two or more events will go in the draw to win $1,000 in vouchers to Karangahape Road establishments of their choosing.

Long known as a place of freedom and expression by supporters, and of sin and wickedness by conservatives, the street has hosted places geared for all types and interests. Many of the events directly link to some of the most iconic clubs, parlours, and brothels.

Carmen Jones will be pouring their Pink Pussy Cat cocktail on July 27, a reference to the street's first Strip Club which opened in 1963, much to the delight (and certainly ire) of the respectable citizenry.

Open Late, a cafe-cum-wine bar, will pour a special KG Club spritz, toasting the illegal 1970’s Lesbian club where women (who at that time were not able to hold a liquor licence) gathered to drink and express themselves.,

The campaign, too, is itself a love letter to raunchier establishments on the street.

Marked by dark leather, spaghetti whips, and stiletto heels, the Eat It images prod at our conceptions of food and sex.

“Karangahape Road has always brought together so many people from so many worlds and we wanted a campaign that could express that,” said Jamey Holloway from the Karangahape Road Business Association.

“It’s no accident that the way we talk about food intertwines with sex; words like silky, or gentle, temptation. In reality these worlds are constantly colliding, and they’re usually doing so on K' Road. It's fun,” finished Holloway.
