For NZ Music Month!
Created by leading contemporary artist Jess Johnson and director Simon Ward, XYZZY (pronunced 'zizzy') is an immersive art-based planetarium screening like no other.
Developed through a decade of creative work, Johnson’s hand- drawn compositions are transformed by Ward into an animated web of flesh mandalas, self-replicating architecture, undulating worms, hallucinogenic patterns and messianic alien deities. The dynamic visual atmosphere is charged with 90s-inspired electronic synthesiser tracks from musicians Andrew Clarke, Luke Rowell, Stef Animal and Lachlan Anderson.
PLUS: the final session on Friday 29 May has a Q+A after the show with director and animator Simon Ward, one half of the creative duo behind the film.
This show features strobing effects – some visitors may experience mild motion sickness. Te Whatu Stardome is Auckland’s very own planetarium. It offers fully immersive indoor planetarium shows, telescope viewing, music events and vibrant hands-on exhibits. It’s open day and night, whatever the weather. Come and reconnect with the cosmos!
