On Water Expeditions Announces Competition as Demand for Small Ship Travel Continues to Surge
On Water Expeditions is giving adventure lovers the chance to swap crowded resorts for remote reefs and island-hopping, launching a competition to win an eight-day active Maldives voyage for two aboard a traditional dhoni. Entries are now open and close on 6 August 2026, with the tantalising prize a twin-share cabin on board a Maldives Dhoni Cruise, valued at AUD $6,980.
The lucky winner will experience the Maldives by dhoni, the small traditional vessel of these islands, with opportunities to snorkel coral reefs straight off the boat, swim among manta rays and sea turtles, visit local fishing villages and experience a more active side of the world-renowned destination. Delicious, freshly prepared meals are included and often include seafood caught on the day. The prize is for two people on a fixed departure from 23–30 November 2026.
The competition is launched amid growing demand for smaller-scale and experience-led cruising. Recent research[1] found search demand in Australia for small-ship and expedition cruising brands has grown by 64 per cent over the past two years, while online searches for ‘small ship cruises’ have doubled since 2022. The trend reflects a broader shift away from large, resort-style cruising toward more immersive and active experiences that prioritise cultural connection, nature and access to remote destinations.
Small-vessel voyages also offer a lower-impact alternative to large-scale resort tourism, distributing tourism dollars across multiple islands and local communities rather than concentrating them within a single foreign-owned resort.
Natalie Tambolash, General Manager for World Expeditions NZ, said the competition reflects increased interest in immersive, experience-led travel that moves beyond the traditional resort holiday.
“Travellers are increasingly seeking meaningful and active ways to explore the world. Small-ship voyages like this allow people to access places larger vessels can’t reach while travelling in a lower-impact and far more personal way.”
“The Maldives is often associated with luxury resorts, but this voyage shows travellers a completely different side of the destination,” Tambolash said. “Guests travel aboard a traditional dhoni, explore remote islands and reefs, connect with local communities and spend their days actively experiencing the ocean rather than simply looking at it from the shore.”
