This week marks the 50th anniversary of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) with the theme Ake Ake Ake – A Forever Language. To celebrate, Waiata Anthems has launched its latest campaign, Waiata in Our Whare.
This year’s kaupapa is about showing waiata where it already lives - in our whare, our offices, our classrooms, and our communities. The campaign brings these everyday moments to life through short video stories that celebrate the diverse ways Aotearoa embraces waiata Māori.
As Dame Hinewehi Mohi, founder of Waiata Anthems, shares:
“Waiata is one of the easiest and fun ways to access and learn te reo Māori, and to take with us wherever we are in the world. Through repetition, melody, and emotional connection, waiata helps people of all backgrounds grow their understanding of te reo Māori and strengthen their connection to the culture. For Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2025, our goal is to highlight the many ways waiata Māori lives in our world today, reinforcing that it’s not just entertainment, it’s a living, breathing vehicle for te reo and cultural connection.”
