Sarita Solvig Blankenburg: Panchakarma – Ayurveda’s Autumn Reset

Sarita Solvig Blankenburg: Panchakarma – Ayurveda’s Autumn Reset

As the warmth of summer fades and we transition into the cooler, damper months, autumn offers the ideal opportunity to reset the body and mind.

In Ayurveda, this seasonal shift is a powerful time to cleanse and strengthen the system in preparation for winter, when immunity is often challenged by cold weather and increased exposure to illness.

Ayurveda recommends undertaking a Panchakarma cleanse at the junction of seasons, particularly in spring and autumn. This ancient practice is a deeply restorative process designed to remove accumulated toxins, rebalance the body, and restore vitality.

The word Panchakarma comes from Sanskrit, where ‘pancha' means five and ‘karma' means actions. It refers to five therapeutic processes that work together to eliminate toxins from the body and reset its natural healing mechanisms. While traditionally performed in specialised clinics in India, Panchakarma has been adapted into a structured, supported programme suitable for modern lifestyles.

At our Ayurveda New Zealand clinic in Grey Lynn, we offer Panchakarma in an authentic and personalised way, similar to what you would experience in India. Following advanced training at the Athreya Panchakarma Hospital in Bangalore, we have integrated traditional methods with tailored support to guide clients safely through the process.

The programme typically runs over 17 to 21 days and is divided into five key phases.

The first phase, Purva Karma, focuses on preparation. Clients establish a daily routine including tongue scraping, oil pulling, self massage with warm herbal oils, gentle yoga and an Ayurvedic meal plan. This phase supports digestion and begins loosening toxins in the body.

The second phase, Snehapana, involves the intake of medicated ghee early in the morning. Specific formulations are selected based on individual needs. For example, Tikta Ghritta supports liver detoxification, Brahmi Ghritta nourishes the nervous system, and Ashoka Ghritta is often used for women’s health concerns. Close guidance ensures the process is safe and effective.

The third phase includes therapeutic treatments at the clinic such as Abhyanga massage, Shirodhara for deep relaxation, Nasya for sinus health, and Garshana for weight loss to promote detoxification through the skin.

The fourth phase, Pradhana Karma, is the main elimination stage. This may include a gentle purgation process to release toxins from the digestive system and tissues.

The final phase, Rasayana, focuses on rejuvenation. The body is nourished with restorative herbs, a strengthening diet and calming practices to rebuild energy and vitality.

The benefits of Panchakarma are both immediate and long lasting. Clients often report improved digestion, better sleep, increased energy, mental clarity and emotional balance. Many also experience natural and sustainable weight loss as the body releases stored toxins.

Beyond physical results, Panchakarma offers a profound sense of reset. It allows the body to return to its natural state of balance and resilience, supporting long term wellbeing.
