Great North Road Improvements Project

Kia ora,

The second stage of the Great North Road Improvements project is nearly complete and stage 3 is due to start mid-May. We plan to bring the start of stage 4 forward to late May. More details will be provided closer to time. We will be working on Great North Road until late 2025.

Where  and When?
Hours of work

Two locations on Great North Road, both sides of the road:

·       between Nixon Street and Mackelvie Street.

·       between Brisbane Street and King Street

20 May 2025 – early July 2025 7am to 7pm, Monday – Friday

7am to 6pm, Saturday (as required)

Site Set Up – Night Works

The existing sites will be disestablished and new sites set up on Monday 19 May 2025. Fences and temporary traffic management will be removed, and line marking installed in the completed areas between Mackelvie Street and Sussex Street, Northland Street and Crummer Road. This work will be done 5:30pm - 11:00pm.

Sites will remain near St Joseph’s Church/Grey Lynn Library and 419 Great North Road until early June while we finish up some work here.

Traffic management for the new sites will then be set up. New road line marking will be installed to support traffic flow around our work sites. This will be done 11:00pm Monday 19 May – 5:00am Tuesday 20 May. These two sections of Great North Road will be closed to all traffic except buses during this time. There will be detours in place, please follow on street signage. This is not particularly noisy work but there will be vehicle movements and loading/unloading of trucks. This work may be postponed in the event of bad weather.

Main Works – What to Expect

We will be installing new drainage, ducting, streetlighting, footpaths, cycle lanes, tree pits and upgrading intersections.

There will be no entry to the following side streets from Great North Rd: Pollen St, Mackelvie St, Turakina St, Ariki St and Potatau St. Please follow detour signs to the next accessible side street.

To maintain traffic flow and minimise disruption, the Nixon St and Great North Rd intersection will not be closed completely while we rebuild the intersection. There will be a left turn only from Great North Rd. There will be no exit from Nixon St onto Great North Rd. Exit out of Nixon St and Burgoyne St will be via Chapman St, which will be two-way during the construction period.

There will be a partial closure of the Burns St intersection with Great North Rd. There will be a left turn only from Great North Rd. Exit from Burns St will be via Putiki St and Kirk St.

Construction of the new intersections between Brisbane St and King St will be staggered. Brisbane St will be completed first, then King St and lastly Potatau St. During construction of the intersection at Brisbane St, vehicle access to the top of the street will be open from Dean St.

There will be a partial closure of the King St intersection with Great North Rd. There will be a left turn only from Great North Rd. Vehicles travelling from Grey Lynn will access King St via Potatau St and Dean St. Exit from King St will be via Dean St. To allow for large vehicles along Dean St, there will be no parking on the northern side of the street.

See www.AT.govt.nz/greatnorthroad for detour details. We will be working on both sides of Great North Road at a time. There will be one lane of traffic open in each direction along Great North Road around our sites.

Vehicle access to businesses and residential properties will be maintained throughout the works. There will be Traffic Controllers on site to manage access to properties next to our site.

Bus stops within our site will be temporarily closed and signage will direct people to the nearest bus stop. There will be some pedestrian diversions in place around our site and no on-street parking within our work areas. You may need to park on your property or further down the road and walk to your property.

Some of our work can be noisy when we are breaking ground and digging trenches for drainage and ducting. We will use sound mats around our site to minimise the disruption.

Staging Plan (please note timelines are indicative and may change)
