Review finds Aucklanders’ satisfaction with waste services at its highest since 2018

A value for money review of Auckland Council's waste services has found strong overall performance, with customer satisfaction reaching 81 per cent – its highest level since 2018.

It also found continued progress on waste minimisation and reducing waste sent to landfill.

The review found Auckland Council’s waste services are strongly aligned with the goals of Auckland's Waste Minimisation and Management Plan, delivering value through waste and resource recovery services, partnerships and community initiatives.

It notes positive outcomes across the waste services system, including more than 24,000 tonnes of food scraps diverted from landfill last year and a 13 per cent reduction in the amount of waste sent to landfill per person over the review period.

Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson, Chair of the Value for Money Committee, says the review shows Auckland's waste services delivering positive results.

"I’m really excited to build on these results getting even more value from the investments we've made,” says Councillor Simpson.

"Food scraps are one of our biggest opportunities to reduce waste sent to landfill. I admit to being reluctant at first to use my food scraps bin, but now I am a total convert. It’s made a real difference to our weekly waste and knowing it’s being converted into renewable clean energy (biogas) and liquid fertiliser is an added bonus.

“The more Aucklanders who use the service, the greater the benefit for households and our city."

Auckland Council General Manager for Waste Solutions, Justine Haves, says the review confirms Auckland is making progress on waste minimisation while identifying opportunities to build on that success.

"The review highlights the contribution that services such as rubbish, recycling and food scraps collections, our 13 community recycling centres and resource recovery facilities, and community waste minimisation programmes, are making to reduce waste and recover valuable resources.”

There are opportunities to strengthen understanding of the environmental, community and economic benefits delivered across Auckland’s waste services and use that information to guide future investment.

"We've made good progress, but Auckland is growing and changing. The next step is making sure we're focused on the things that will make the biggest difference, whether that's improving services, supporting Māori outcomes, or working more closely with communities and industry to reduce waste," says Ms Haves.

"This isn't about substantially changing Auckland's current mix of waste services. It's about building on what's working well and applying evidence to guide future investment decisions."

The review's recommendations will now be implemented as part of ongoing planning and delivery of Auckland's waste services, with a continued waste minimisation focus.
