News from the Leys Little Library

Kia ora koutou, As we head into the winter months our thoughts can turn to the pursuit of coziness. And on a cold, wet day there can be nothing nicer than staying indoors and reading a good book with a nice warm drink on hand.

But as a little library with limited space, we can’t always guarantee that that good book will be here waiting for you on one of our shelves. In which case, requesting books is always the preferred method of getting a great read. Requesting books is relatively straightforward. But picking up your requests from our Holds Shelf can be another matter So, for this month, we are focusing on tech tips to help you with the process of picking up your requests.

Hard to believe but it has been two years since Auckland Libraries adopted a new system that changed the way we manage our collections and the ebb and flow of library books around Auckland. And part of that change was the way books are positioned on the Holds Shelf. Now, when you receive an email to alert you of your requested book’s arrival, you will also receive a shelf number that tells you where your book is placed.

However, if you have several books that have arrived at different times, it can be annoying having to hunt down individual emails. In such situations the Auckland Libraries app can be super helpful. This is because all your pickups and their corresponding shelf numbers appear in one section.

Of course, the app has lots of other handy features, such as a reading tracker and an ability to manage linked accounts. You can also scan your library barcode to create a digital copy which is great if you forget to bring your physical card to the library.

The other great innovation that has happened very recently is an update to our self-check unit. Now, when your request arrives, you can log into your account at the self-check out and see the request and its corresponding hold shelf number. This can be useful if you can’t access the Auckland Libraries app.

We hope you find these tips useful and, if in doubt, we are always here to help.
