In the run up to summer, Kelmarna is holding an exciting challenge: Connect to Your Kai - a hands-on journey of growing, sourcing, preparing and sharing climate friendly kai.
Want to be part of your local food systems but don't know where to start? Sign up to this challenge and across November you’ll receive a weekly email filled with tips and resources to help you grow your connection to local food. This is free to join, and everyone who signs up goes in the draw to win one of 5 Kelmarna veggie boxes!
Kelmarna will also host a variety of three hour workshops (10am – 1pm) running on consecutive Sunday mornings, as a more practical opportunity to engage in the weekly theme. Tickets for all workshops use a pay-what you can model.
Connect to Your Kai Workshop Series:
Grow: Long time Kelmarna Market Gardener Sarah Moss-Baker kicked off the series on November 1st with a practical guide to spring gardening in any space.
Source: This workshop on November 8th is a hands-on cooking class incorporating wholefood and garden-to-table principles: sourcing, preparing, cooking and sharing food created from fresh, seasonal produce. We’re excited to have Kevin Helas from the Wholefood Kitchen, who has trained under the guidance of some of the worlds’ leading wholefood and macrobiotic chefs.
Prepare: Deep dive into the world of lacto-fermentation with passionate fermenter and social and food systems thinker Tom Scott on November 15th. Fermenting is one of the oldest and simplest methods of preserving food. Ferments extend the shelf life of fresh ingredients, maintain or improve nutrient availability, and are good for your gut too. Tom will guide participants through the principles and practice of preparing kai through lacto-fermentation, exploring different fermentation styles, techniques, and ingredients.
Share: Discover the foundations of composting with Maddy Cull on November 22nd, exploring different composting styles for different settings, materials and ingredients. Leader Maddy Cull is a thinker, grower and connector who believes the process of decay holds an opportunity for renewal, connection and collective care. She’ll share practical ways to use finished compost in your garden, as well as how to make compost teas. Maddy will then guide the group in building a static compost pile together - a monument to reciprocity!
Celebrate: The fifth and final workshop on November 29th is time to celebrate ‘food at your fingertips’ with Whakatipu Mana Kai (a kōrero and potluck). Tai Wright and Christina van der Velde will share their story of how they came to undertake their annual Wero Kai - beginning with the inspiration to eat only food from their garden, the bush, and the sea for one month. Don't be daunted however! They will invite us into some simple actions we can take in our own busy lives to connect more deeply to the food systems that surround and sustain us. This kōrero is for anyone interested in ancestral ways of kai, local food, and eating in community.
