Ponsonby Market Day is back on Saturday 10 May to celebrate Mother’s Day!

Every Mother’s Day I remember my own mother.

She was such a character with a quirky sense of humour. I long to see her again in the afterlife as I do want to tell her how much I loved and appreciated her.

Mother’s Day Market Days are popular in the hood and we enjoy seeing our community choosing gifts for the special people in their lives. Please get involved and start planning for the upcoming one on Saturday 10 May.

We all know gardening is seasonal and with each season comes a fresh set of joys as well as jobs in your ever-changing home or market garden.

Even though the gardens themselves have slowed down a lot from their summer highs, May at Kelmarna Community Farm is still a busy time with a load of different jobs and activities.

In her column this month Gael Baldock, talks about Auckland Transport’s priority turnaround. The Surrey Crescent cycleway has been ‘canned' and Cross Street reverts to a service lane usable by service vehicles. Read more on page 17.

Last week’s Anzac Day was another wonderful day out for both young and old and a time to remember those who didn’t return to Aoateroa. Hundreds of people packed into Grey Lynn RSC to remember our heroes – like so many others we all have our own memories.

My grandfather Cyril Bradbury served in the NZ Expeditionary Forces in Egypt during WW1. He returned to NZ with only one lung as he was gassed in the trenches. Like most soldiers he didn’t want to talk about what he’d seen. During WW2, my own father also served in the Navy in UK and in Korea. The ship he was on got torpedoed in the Atlantic ocean and the blast blew my dad into the freezing cold water! He survived. Lest we forget. (MARTIN & JAY PLATT)
