Black Grace Launches Dance Academy and new Fale in Urban Auckland

Leading contemporary dance company, BLACK GRACE is proud to announce the establishment of their new urban Fale along with the launch of their much-anticipated dance Academy.

New headquarters….
After seven years Black Grace has relocated their creative headquarters back to central Auckland, taking up residence within the artistic hub of Auckland’s Karangahape Road.  The new site is a sizeable, multi-purpose, state-of-the art dance studio and event space.

Black Grace plan to utilise the space for a range of events including intimate performances, mixed-media and immersive digital experiences, as well as offering the space to other like-minded arts organisations when the Company is touring internationally.

Black Grace is also thrilled to announce the launch of their inaugural dance Academy.

The academy which commenced on August 1st with six new recruits is a three-month intensive dance programme. The part-time academy is designed to train dancers, with pre-professional or professional experience, primarily in the Black Grace technique and with the aim of identifying future company members.

The programme will be delivered by current and past Black Grace company members alongside guest tutors and specialists giving candidates a truly unique experience. The academy will also include classes in classical ballet technique, vocal training, Pacific dance, choreography and the creative process among other disciplines.

Black Grace founder and Chief Executive Neil Ieremia, ONZM, said; “The intention to launch the Academy has been a long-term objective by Black Grace to create real opportunities for the next generation of contemporary dancers. I’m thrilled to welcome our inaugural six dancers and finally see the academy up and running.

Ieremia added, “I’m proud of our new multi-purpose studio. We’re excited to once again be part of a wider, multi-cultural community and look forward to hosting a range of exciting events in the future.”

Dancers who qualify from the academy will join Black Grace’s ‘Company B’ performance season this October, details of which will be released soon.
