Natural Phenomena, a new solo exhibition by Auckland-based painter Melanie Field, invites viewers to slow down and reconnect with the quieter forces that shape how we experience the world. Presented at Frame Gallery, the exhibition brings together around 30 new paintings that explore transformation, intuition and the unseen energies that move beneath the surface of everyday life.
Spanning large-scale canvases and more intimate works, the paintings have evolved through an extended process of layering, removal and reworking. Field’s practice is deeply intuitive; rather than beginning with a fixed outcome in mind, each work develops through a dialogue between control and surrender. The result is a body of work that feels both deliberate and organic, carrying a quiet sense of movement and depth.
Moments of disruption, uncertainty and resolution remain visible within the paintings, reflecting Field’s interest in transformation and the parallels between artistic process and human experience. Many works move through several stages before reaching completion, giving them a sense of having lived multiple lives.
While abstract in form, the paintings remain grounded in Field’s connection to the natural world. Shifts in colour, texture and mark-making evoke changing light, weather and atmosphere, translating sensory experiences into compositions that feel both familiar and open-ended.
More than a presentation of new work, Natural Phenomena offers an opportunity to engage with painting in a slower, more reflective way. Rather than prescribing meaning, the exhibition leaves space for viewers to bring their own interpretations — inviting moments of calm, curiosity and quiet recognition.
