ANDREW PALACE is a practising artist, who over the last 50 years has worked in leather, then bamboo and silk; and for the last 34 years in recycled brass, copper, stainless steel and glass: making one-off electric lamps as organic forms, contemporary lamps, and then delving into his love of sci-fi with spaceships and other worldly-sculptured lamps. Andrew has had over twenty-five self-curated pop-up exhibitions and this is his latest.
SAM FORD (Ngai Te Rangi) first exhibited his drawings in 1998, while working as a preparator at Auckland Art Gallery, before moving to London in 1999 to work at the National Gallery, where he spent 15 years in the conservation department. It was there that be began making furniture, incorporating European woodworking techniques with Pacific design. Sam uses recycled tapa and matting, along with Polynesian-inspired inlay work, to create one-off pieces of fine furniture that reflects our place in the world. He also continues to make drawings that he presents in his own frames, each of which is unique to the artwork it holds.
TUI HOBSON Sculptor and Carver, works mainly in recycled native timbers. This exhibition will give Tui the opportunity to showcase smaller works after completing two large public installations over the last year. ‘Vairaka’ at Pātaka Art Museum and ‘Pacific Memories’ for the Talking Poles in Tokoroa township. Tui’s indoor pieces will include Totara scuptures, a swamp kauri vaka bench seat and Pacific-designed side tables made from swamp kauri.
MESSINI PALACE (Ngati Apakura) Messini’s pieces represent a merging of traditional toi Maori (vintage and new whakairo rakau) with modern media and vibrant colours. This contemporary urban angle is an expression of who Messini is, her Maori and Pakeha whakapapa and a connection between the past and the present.
The show is on from 13 Oct until 1 Nov at 164 Ponsonby Road (corner of Douglas Street). The gallery is open daily from 10am to 9pm.
