Meat Free May: A Simple Idea With Big Benefits

Meat Free May: A Simple Idea With Big Benefits

Meat Free May is underway and it’s a timely reminder that one of the simplest actions people can take for animals, the planet and their own health is to eat more plant-based meals.

For many Aucklanders, meat-free eating is already part of everyday life. Cafés, restaurants and most supermarkets offer more and more delicious plant-based options than ever before, making it easier for people to explore meals centred around beans, vegetables, grains, nuts and plant proteins.

Here in Ponsonby we are fortunate to have vibrant local businesses embracing plant-based food in creative and inclusive ways for example Mudita with their awesome Malaysian street food, Khu Khu serving up incredible plant-based Thai meals, Satya serving amazing Southern Indian amongst others!

Meat-free meals are no longer niche — they are flavourful, accessible and increasingly enjoyed by people from all walks of life.

Importantly, Meat Free May is not about pressure or perfection. It is about encouragement and participation. Choosing a meat-free meal once a week, trying a plant-based burger, or cooking a vegan curry for friends can all make a positive difference.

Animal agriculture has a significant environmental footprint, contributing to climate change, water use and habitat destruction. At the same time, plant-based eating can support healthier lifestyles while helping reduce demand for animal suffering.

This May, we encourage readers to give it a go. Share a vegan meal, support local plant-based businesses, or try our online Plant based challenge?

Small choices, multiplied across communities, really can create meaningful change.
