On 11 April, landmarks across Aotearoa, inculuding Auckland Aotea Centre will glow blue as part of the Spark the Night Campaign, inspired by PD Avengers in the USA. This global movement aims to raise awareness of the 12 million people worldwide living with Parkinson’s, including 13,000 New Zealanders.
In solidarity with the international Parkinson’s community, cities and regions throughout New Zealand are joining Parkinson’s New Zealand by illuminating fountains, clock towers, museums, bridges, tunnels and more. From Invercargill to Whangarei, communities are coming together to shine a light on Parkinson’s and show support for those living with the condition.
Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition that affects movement and can cause tremors, stiffness, and difficulties with balance and coordination. It is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world, with no cure.
As the number of people with Parkinson's continues to grow, it's more important than ever to raise awareness says Andrew Bell, Chief Executive of Parkinson’s New Zealand.
"Raising awareness of Parkinson’s is more than just lighting up landmarks—it’s about shining a light on the daily challenges faced by thousands of New Zealanders and millions worldwide. By coming together as a community, we can increase awareness, encourage early diagnosis, and ensure families affected by Parkinson’s receive the support and care they need.”
We are thrilled that, in just its second year, even more landmarks, over 40, will shine blue this year, showing support and solidarity with everyone living with Parkinson’s today.
