This Labour Weekend, the KOAST – Tai Tokerau Art Trail invites visitors to journey through the Mid–Far North and experience art in the places where it’s created. Across 47 venues, nearly 200 artists - from open studios and shared creative spaces to cultural landmarks and contemporary galleries - make KOAST one of the largest art trail events in Aotearoa. Now in its 9th year, KOAST has grown into a much-loved celebration of creativity and community.
The trail stretches from Kawakawa and Russell to the cultural richness of the Hokianga and the northern reaches of Kaitaia, offering visitors a chance to explore painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewellery, woodwork, glass art, fibre arts, mosaics, photography, carving, and more.
Cultural and Contemporary Highlights
This year’s participating venues include cultural landmarks such as Te Ahu Museum, Te Ahurea and Manea – Footsteps of Kupe, alongside contemporary galleries including Village Arts, No.1 Parnell, South Sea Art, Te Pu o Te Wheke, Taonga O Te Ao, Ngāpuhi Creatives, and Little Black Gallery. Private studios, heritage buildings, and collective art hubs complete a diverse mix of spaces, each offering something different to see, experience, and take home.
Tourism and Experience
KOAST is as much about the journey as the art. Visitors can combine the trail with vineyard tastings, heritage walks, local markets, or simply relaxing on golden-sand beaches. From winding coastal roads and subtropical forests to historic townships and harbour views, Northland offers an unforgettable backdrop for a long weekend of exploration.
Economic and Community Impact
KOAST is also a driver of regional growth. The event attracts thousands of visitors, boosting local accommodation, cafés, restaurants, and retail businesses during Labour Weekend. For artists, KOAST provides one of the most important opportunities of the year to sell work, gain commissions, and connect
with collectors and new audiences.
“KOAST is more than an art event - it’s a catalyst for the cultural economy in the Far North,” says
Anna Hamilton, Trustee of the Bay of Islands Creative Charitable Trust, which delivers the event. “It connects communities, supports artists, and draws people into one of the most beautiful regions of New Zealand.”
Education and Inclusion
KOAST also welcomes schools on Friday 24 October, the trail’s opening day. Principals across the Mid- Far North have been invited to bring classes to meet artists, see demonstrations, and experience creativity
irst -hand. Classes will also be encouraged to produce an artwork inspired by their visit, with one piece from each school to be shared on KOAST’s Facebook page as a celebration of student creativity.
Trail Guides, available for purchase, provide maps, artist listings, and include entry to a $5,000 raffle; a way for visitors and schools alike to support the event’s future.
