OnShout offers new ways for easy, social, and group gifting
Kiwi fintech OnShout has launched a gifting service that aims to eliminate unwanted gifts, replacing them with items people really want. It is redefining how Kiwis gift and celebrate, turning gifting into a social and transparent process for all ages.
Here’s a scenario that plays out every year. You want an iPhone for Christmas. Instead, you get three gift cards from different retailers and a docking station that’s not even compatible.
It’s a common scenario. By mid-morning last Boxing Day more than 4600 unwanted Christmas presents had been listed for sale on Trade Me.
The solution: ask for what you want and make it easy for people to help you get it.
That’s where OnShout steps in. The Kiwi made web application and online portal lets users request an item or create a wish list for the things they truly want.
- The giftee creates a listing for the item or amount they want
- OnShout generates the page and a link to it
- The giftee shares the link with friends and family
- People simply hop online, follow the link, and contribute any amount.
Users get to set the gifting goal, and once it is reached, they can generate a gift card to purchase what they want through Prezzee, which is currently offering digital gift cards for 65 local retailers.
Gen Z and Gen Alpha are driving a change in this traditional gifting behaviour. They value shared, digital experiences, and what matters most – getting what they want in a practical and personal way. What they don’t want are multiple small gifts that lack purpose.
“Gifting is hard,” says Bruce Howe, Managing Director of OnShout and Putti. “Too often it becomes a tale of disappointment. Givers are over-optimistic, they wrongly believe that unsolicited picks will be just as good as the hints and suggestions they ignored. That’s a classic giver–receiver mismatch. The receivers pretend to like the gift and then quietly get rid of it.”
For Gen X’ers and Boomers, shopping for younger generations has become a painful guessing game in an age of abundance. Gifting can even feel wasteful. Studies have named this phenomena ‘deadweight loss’ because recipients value mismatched gifts at less than the giver paid.
“You know when you’re gifting ‘wrong’, we all know that feeling. That the gift isn’t quite right but you need to get them something. Then you proceed with the purchase, apprehensively, because you feel obligated. That’s what OnShout is here to solve,” says Bruce.
OnShout gives users visibility and a history of their gifting journey. The app allows you to track who contributed, what was gifted, and when, making it easy to look back for inspiration for future gifts. It also allows givers to remain anonymous or be set up for surprise gifting - gathering contributions from others while you wait to reveal the perfect gift at just the right moment.
OnShout consolidates multiple small unwanted gifts into one meaningful purchase. This delivers a better experience for the gift receiver, reduces waste, and helps everyone involved feel at ease with the gifting – no more unwanted gifts to list on the market on Boxing Day. And for the giver, no more anxiety watching the reaction when your gift gets opened.
“We wanted to create a platform that reflects how people actually give in this digital era, and that’s collaboratively, socially, and online. Gifting shouldn’t be about guesswork or waste. It should be about coming together to make something meaningful happen,” says Bruce.
