Hospitality New Zealand (Hospitality NZ) supports Auckland Transport’s decision to delay the introduction of overnight on-street parking charges in Auckland’s central city until March 2026.
Under Auckland Transport’s revised plan, on-street parking charges from 6pm to 8am will come into effect in March 2026 at a rate of $1-$2 per hour, depending on demand.
Hospitality NZ Chief Executive Steve Armitage says: “Hospitality NZ, alongside other organisations, advocated strongly with Auckland Transport to reconsider the charges it originally proposed last year.
“Hospitality is at the heart of Auckland’s city centre. To keep our nightlife vibrant, we need parking policies that encourage, rather than deter, people from enjoying the city’s hospitality scene.
“Many of Auckland’s central city hospitality workers rely on affordable and secure parking while they’re at work. Because they often finish late, driving is often the safest and most dependable way to get home.
“Auckland Transport’s delay to overnight parking charges, and confirmation of parking rates when charging is introduced next year, provides these workers with crucial breathing room and some certainty, as it does for patrons.
“This is important as businesses work hard to rebuild and ensure staff and customers alike have easy access to the city centre.
“We appreciate Auckland Transport’s willingness to listen to the concerns of our members and the wider community, and to be flexible in their approach.”
