Road resurfacing
Road resurfacing work is starting soon and will be carried out alongside road repairs. Resurfacing work will be done in stages along Great North Road and at night to allow for full road closures. This means we can complete the work more efficiently and ensure a high-quality finish.
The process involves:
- Milling - removing the existing top asphalt layer of the road
- Putting the first layer of asphalt on the road
- Laying the final asphalt road surface
Linemarking
- Some areas of Great North Road require a ’deep lift’ which means a thicker layer of asphalt in the centre of the road is removed. This will improve the structure and durability of the road. This work will be done in night shifts after the milling of both northern and southern sides have been completed. More details will be provided closer to when these works start.
Where
- Great North Road (see work location map below).
- Work will start at the Newton Road end of Great North Road and progress towards
- Crummer Road on the southern side
- Southern side – 6 October – 11 October (5 nights)
When
- Northern side – end of November (5 nights)
- Night shift hours 6:00pm – 6:00am
What we’re doing
- Putting the first layer of asphalt on the road
- Milling – removing the existing top layer of asphalt of the road
How it may impact you
- Sections of Great North Road will be closed to all traffic except buses. There will be detours in place. Detours will be available on the project webpage at the end of next week www.AT.govt.nz/greatnorthroad
- Works will create noise. We will work hard to complete the noisiest work before 10:30pm There will be machinery and vehicle movement noise at other times.
- The night crew are aware of nearby residents and will limit unnecessary noise.
- On-street parking will be unavailable near our worksites. You may need to either park on your property or on a side road and walk to your property.
- The final asphalt road surface and line marking will be laid after the first layer of asphalt and all road repairs have been completed. This is planned for early December.
Road repairs
- Road repairs are progressing well on the northern side of Great North Road with concrete curing in most areas. This work involves pouring new concrete to strengthen the road base and will enhance the durability of the road surface and reduce future maintenance needs.
- We expect to begin work on the southern side on Great North Road around 7 October starting at the Newton Road end of Great North Road and working towards Crummer Road. This work will continue until late November. These works will be completed during day shift hours 7am – 7pm.
How travel is affected:
- Some intersections with side streets will close when we are completing repairs in front of
them. The closures will be in place for two days or up to two weeks depending on the extent of the repairs. Where possible, steel plates will be used to cover the work area while the new concrete cures. This will limit the time some intersections are closed. - Traffic through Nixon Street will be temporarily reduced to one lane. Two way traffic flow will be controlled by traffic management at the Great North Road intersection.
- Burns St and King St intersections will be closed for at least two consecutive Saturdays.
- Intersections at Waima St, Kirk St and Commercial Rd will be closed for up to two weeks.
- There will be no parking on both sides of Great North Road around our worksites. This is to allow enough space for our team to work safely and maintain two-way traffic flow.
