We’re repairing and resurfacing Great North Road as part of the Great North Road Improvements project
We are making good progress on the Great North Road Improvements project and side street intersections. We have been completing intersection improvements and footpath upgrades, and installing new pedestrian crossings, bus stops and garden beds.
Intersections are being reopened progressively as they are completed, and planting has started. This work will continue for the next month.
We are now at the final stage, road repairs and resurfacing. Road repairs have begun and will be completed along with road resurfacing by the end of the year. Road repairs will be completed before we move on to road resurfacing.
Here is what you need to know about the work happening near you:
Road repairs
When: Now to December 2025
Where: Great North Road (see work location map below)
- Repairs will start on the northern side of Great North Road near Crummer Road, progressing towards Ponsonby Road, then switching to the southern side.
- Road repairs are not required in all areas. Most repairs will be on the southern side of Great North Road.
What we’re doing: We are carrying out repairs to enhance the durability of the road surface and reduce future maintenance needs. Repairs will involve:
- Removing the road surface
- Excavating a layer beneath
- Pouring new concrete to strengthen the base
How it may impact you
- Building access will be maintained. Your stakeholder manager will contact you in advance if vehicle access needs to be restricted.
- Works will create noise. Sound mats will be used to reduce noise impacts.
- On-street parking will be unavailable near our worksites. You may need to either park on your property or on a side road and walk to your property.
How travel is affected
- Great North Road will remain open with a two-way traffic flow.
- Intersections with side roads may be closed for up to two weeks.
- Detours will be in place to guide traffic around the site.
- After concrete pours, concrete will need to cure for approximately seven days before vehicles can drive on it.
Road resurfacing
Once road repairs are complete, road resurfacing will begin. Resurfacing work will involve some nightwork to allow for full road closures, ensuring high-quality finish and faster completion. We will contact residents and businesses in the area closer to the date with more information.
Line marking
Road resurfacing will be followed by new line marking and installation of cycle lane separators. Some final markings will be applied early in the New Year to allow the asphalt to settle properly before painting.
