Robin O’Donnell Architects is a boutique architectural practice, that specializes in bespoke residential alterations, additions and new builds. The practice was founded in 1999, and has an established reputation in its architectural niche, having won a number of prestigious NZIA Architectural Awards over the years. The principal – Robin O’Donnell – is also a greater Ponsonby local, who has lived in both Grey Lynn and Herne Bay for over 35 years. So, he knows the neighbourhood, and the design challenges and opportunities that inner city properties present.
Many people wonder why you might use an architect to assist in the realization of your project. The answer to that question is that architects have specialized university training (5 years) and consequently an approach to design and construction that ensures that they can – on your behalf – maximize the greatest potential out of your particular design challenges. Where others see problems, architects generally see opportunity and bring this thinking to the table.
Currently the practice is noticing that there is some reticence in engaging with the design and construction market. While there may be valid reasons for not proceeding with a construction project, there are also many good reasons for doing so if you are able to make that happen. Chief amongst these reasons, is that as in most things, it is unlikely that a construction project will ever be cheaper than it is today (hard though that sometimes may be able to believe), and by moving ahead now you can start enjoying life in your dream home sooner rather than later.
Many people who are contemplating a construction project, do not realize how important it is for that project to be well organized – not just in terms of efficiency on site – but also in terms of the process that is followed long before you are calling for tenders. Architects are trained to follow processes – just like your lawyer or accountant - to ensure that insofar as they are able, you are provided with the information you need to methodically and safely move through the design and construction process. Because there are many alternative routes, and large amounts of design and documentation work, that process can be customized to meet your needs, whether that is in the form of a concept masterplan that you will implement over a series of stages, or a small addition and alteration that you want to have ready for a special occasion.
Robin O’Donnell Architects has completed new builds and renovations all over Auckland and beyond – they are currently involved in a new build on Great Barrier Island. They have also completed award-winning work in the greater Ponsonby area, with a new St Mary’s Bay house of theirs recently winning an NZIA Award for Architecture, showing that new builds can be completely compatible with the heritage values that the inner city supports.
While the practice has been around for nearly 30 years, and is boutique in nature, Robin is ably assisted by dedicated staff who through the years and their lived experience are able to answer the many design challenges that any home needs to be able to address. Robin is now contemplating down-sizing from a large family home, while some of his staff are in the thick of raising young families of their own. A great home, in a great neighbourhood is the principal design challenge that needs to be answered for any client. But in greater Ponsonby, and its surrounding heritage areas, locals tend to move in and stay (why
