Last Tuesday afternoon and just as we were about to upload our September eMag we heard that a huge tree had fallen across the playground at the bottom of Ponsonby Park playground.There was debris everywhere and thankfully there were no children affected.
What a good month August was, we had NZ Fashion week and 15 local designers walked the runway showing off their collections. The Future of Fashion Driven by Giltrap Group show saw eight emerging designers present collections to a packed audience at Shed 10. Designers were selected following a judging process by a panel featuring designers Vicki Taylor, Wynn Hamlyn, NZFW Creative Director Dan Ahwa and Giltrap Group CEO, Steve Kenchington.
Our cover star, Designer Winnie Solomon, of Winnie Catherine, walked away with the award which includes support from Giltrap Group brand Škoda, financial support, mentorship and media exposure, helping her transition into the next phase of her business. Winnie Catherine has also recently been welcomed into The Shelter, a Ponsonby concept store curated by Vicki Taylor that showcases emerging, established and international labels.
Last Friday we attended the opening night of Cirque Alice, an epic new circus production inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, playing at The Civic until next Sunday, 6 September 2026.
Cirque Alice features mesmerising aerialists and acrobats, mind-bending contortionists, exquisite puppetry, special guest musical and comedic artists and more, accompanied by a soundtrack of newly arranged remixes of classical favourites.
Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson says Cirque Alice brings a special cultural moment for Aucklanders and visitors alike. “Productions of this scale bring fresh energy to the city centre, drawing audiences, supporting local hospitality and retail, and creating memorable experiences for people of all ages. I’m particularly excited to see yet another internationally acclaimed show coming to Auckland - it’s events like these that remind us how vital and powerful live performance is in shaping a vibrant, creative city.”
