FREE Comedy, More Connection

FREE Comedy, More Connection

Every Friday till Christmas, Covert Theatre in the heart of Ponsonby is offering a free improv comedy show called The Social Club, as a way to combat the cost of living crisis and social disconnection.

“Everyone is digging bloody deep at the moment, including the small businesses around here and especially hospo. So we decided, actually we could do something,” says Artistic Director and theatre founder, Wade Jackson. “Make our late show Friday a free show and put on some free nibbles. Hopefully people will stick around for a chat afterwards.”

Wade says as a charitable organisation, the Covert Theatre’s purpose has long been to ‘enhance human connection through play’.

“This is one of those cultural times when I think our comedy chops at the Covert can help. When a bit of light relief goes a long way.”

Wade says they want their Auckland community to know you can step outside your door and meet up with your mates for a laugh, without it costing you this month’s power bill.“We opened this theatre the year covid hit. We made it through that, We’re fighting our way through the funding drought for the Arts and now we’re hit with this cost of living crisis. Well, we’ll make it through this too if we all just make it a bit easier for each other. See you at The Social Club.”
