The Herald have just announced a fire has broken out at New World, Victoria Park.
Frightened shoppers told the Herald an alarm went off and they had to flee, abandoning their trolleys. People have been told to avoid the area and residents asked to close their windows.
The fire is still not under control and black smoke can be seen billowing from the supermarket’s roof across the city after the fire which started about 11.18am. Smoke is drifting up into Ponsonby area and towards Grey Lynn.
More than 30 firefighters are on the scene, with more on the way, a Fire and Emergency spokesman said. As at 11.50am, there are 11 trucks and a Command Unit at the scene. The spokesman didn’t know where the fire began, or the cause. All persons had been accounted for.
The fire had now been upgraded to “fourth alarm” and trucks are on the way from across Auckland.
