Desley Simpson: ‘AUCKLAND’ - Our sign with so much more to say

There’s a special kind of excitement that comes when something new lands in the heart of our city – that energy that says, ‘yes, this belongs here’.

That’s exactly how it felt when the new AUCKLAND sign was unveiled on 15 May 2026 at the base of the Sky Tower. Within moments it seemed to settle into our skyline as though it had always been there, and it’s hard not to wonder how we ever went without it. Cities around the world proudly display their own iconic markers, and Auckland - a global city in every sense – has long deserved one that reflects who we are.

This sign isn’t just about tourism or photo ops. It’s about pride. It’s about belonging. It’s about giving Aucklanders something more to connect with, something that carries the spirit of our people.

What really struck me was the passion behind the project. Six months of engineering challenges, weight‑limit negotiations, colour debates - all driven by people who genuinely cared about getting it right. That slightly glittery gold wasn’t a last‑minute flourish. It was chosen deliberately because it captures something special about Auckland - bright in a way that feels personal rather than performative.

The artwork competition that shaped the sign’s first look was a story in itself. Submissions poured in from every corner of the city - all ages, all backgrounds - each one telling a story in a way that was fresh, surprising, and deeply heartfelt. The judging panel weighed creativity, visual impact, narrative strength, and scale, spending hours making sure the final choice honoured the city’s voice.

And behind the scenes, the work was immense. Each aluminium letter took a team of five people four weeks to build - a serious undertaking when you remember they weigh in at around 600kg each! They were trucked in on a flatbed and craned into place under the cover of night. The artwork was applied as decals in the workshop so everything arrived crisp, clean, and ready to shine.

These letters may spell out the name of our home, but what they really celebrate is Auckland’s confidence, creativity, and heart. They signal a city moving forward - vibrant, welcoming, full of possibility - a city that knows exactly who it is and isn’t afraid to show off a little.

What I love most is that the sign isn’t static. It’s alive. The current artwork will stay up for a few weeks - maybe longer - before the gold base is revealed. After that, it becomes a canvas for whatever Auckland wants to say next - community celebrations, cultural moments, seasonal events, collaborations. It’s the kind of evolving, people‑centred placemaking you see in cities that know their worth.

So go on - take a photo, strike a pose, share the moment. This is Auckland, and it’s ours.

A big thank you to the team at Sky City for bringing this to life!
