Richmond Road School congratulates Principal Jacqui Yearsley who recently returned home after being invited to Brown University in Rhode Island, United States off the back of her PhD in bilingual education.
Brown University is a private Ivy League research university and one of the oldest higher education institutions in America. The university hosted an event for Dr Yearsley to present work from her PhD and share her experience as a bilingual education specialist with scholars and practitioners working with Indigenous and other minority languages in education settings. Dr Yearsley also had opportunities for exchange and learning with scholars and education experts of the Brown University community, bringing valuable information home to Aotearoa.
Dr Yearsley’s PhD focuses on Professional Learning and Development for bilingual teachers, analysing the learning experiences of Māori, Samoan and Tongan bilingual teachers, and proposing a new model to promote change in Professional Learning and Development in education.
Richmond Road School has four language units; Māori, English, Samoan and French. It is the only such school in Aotearoa. The school is therefore very fortunate to have Dr Yearsley, or “Whaea Jacqui” as she is known at kura, bringing her specialist knowledge and experience to work, and now bringing international knowledge home too.

We (Colin and I) have witnessed all of our children’s passions, including those of our daughter Jax. Felicitations to our daughter and many thanks to the Brown University faculty for hosting her and making her so welcome. We wait, in anticipation, for the next chapter in her educational journey.
