This morning I woke up to find Auckland Transport taking out the one-way system on Crummer Road and Scanlan Street.
We residents were not consulted by AT about the removal of this one-way system nor were we notified that it would be removed.
On 6 July we were notified that AT would be installing cycle lane road markings in Grey Lynn. The Notice had a map of the work area but the map was so small it was impossible to see anything on it let alone work out what was going to happen. There was no consultation with residents that these works were to take place nor about what the consequences of the work would be to our neighborhood.
I wrote to AT, at the email on its Notice, on the 7 July asking for a large map, for details of the work and what it would mean for residents. I complained about the lack of information in the notice which completely failed to communicate any real information to residents about the project. I also complained about the lack of consultation on this project. With hindsight it would appear the original notice was at best a box ticking exercise by AT.
I also asked if residents would get a credit on their parking permit because parking would be restricted. My inquiry was sidelined to Parking who informed me that I could park elsewhere within the zone.
I have received no other response to my complaint and nobody addressed the issues outlined as requiring a response from their Notice nor have they provided another map and explanation of the works.
The removal of our One Way system appears to be happening under the guise of the cycle lane road markings when they are surely two separate issues.
I understand the one-way system was installed many years ago because three boys were killed at this intersection. It was installed as a public health and safety measure. The intersection is not safe and this part of the road is unsafe. From time to time we have domestic animals killed and residents regularly feel unsafe with drivers driving fast.
AT has not done any traffic survey on this intersection. The fact of the lack of consultation would suggest that the AT person who signed off this project did not know the reason for the one-way system – which was in place before the creation of AT – was a health and safety issue.
Seeing what AT were in fact doing this morning I called the number in the Notice which states; “If you have any queries or concerns about this project, please contact AT: Phone 09 355 3553." I called the number to be told I had contacted AT’s customer service agent and they had no way of putting me through to AT. So actually you CANNOT contact AT. The only thing they could do was to record my complaint which they have done. It may take 10 days to deal with by which time the works will be completed!
