In an unlikely but fortuitous collaboration, Mussie Sheikh, a local philanthropist, has teamed up with Flavio Manzoni, Ferrari’s Chief Design Officer, the genius mastermind behind bringing Ferrari’s sports cars to life.
Manzoni’s contributions to the book not only include enchanting illustrations drawn from his childhood but also a heartfelt afterword, where he shares insights into his creative process and the parallels between the dreams of his youth and the themes of the story.
The project began spontaneously, with Sheikh's idea to write a children's book that diverged from typical narratives. "I thought it would be a cool idea," Sheikh explained. After obtaining permission from Ferrari for the use of their vehicles in the story, he discussed the concept with Manzoni over a few catch-ups. Inspired by the discussion, Manzoni decided to contribute childhood drawings and an afterword to the book, adding a layer of depth and nostalgia.
The book tells the story of Billy, a young boy who dreams of becoming a race car driver, a narrative that faces initial ridicule by classmates but is pursued with relentless determination. The illustrations were drawn by 21 year old Auckland native, Ishana Ratti.
Feedback since the release has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly praising the relatable narrative. "People are really liking the story, especially the ending—I won't give it away, but I'm a fan of being real in life. It doesn't have the standard kids' book story", Sheikh shared.
This work by Sheikh and contributions by Manzoni is a a testament to the power of dreaming big and the incredible outcomes when diverse worlds unite for a shared cause. A prime example of Kiwi ingenuity.
